Last-Minute Heroics: How Müller’s Historic Strike Led Bayern to Victory Over Freiburg
In the final Bundesliga match before the international break, Bayern Munich secured a convincing 2-0 victory over SC Freiburg at the Allianz Arena, making it two wins out of two under new head coach Vincent Kompany.
Bayern dominated from the start, with Harry Kane coming close by hitting the side netting early on. Michael Olise also tested Freiburg’s goalkeeper, Florian Müller, with a powerful shot. Freiburg’s defense held firm initially, but their resistance was broken in the 37th minute when a header from Kane struck Max Rosenfelder’s hand, resulting in a penalty. Kane calmly converted, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way for his first goal of the Bundesliga season.
Freiburg responded with more urgency after the hour mark. A dangerous free-kick from Vincenzo Grifo found Lukas Kübler, but Bayern’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was quick to react. Shortly after, a shot from Patrick Osterhage was deflected by Kim Min-Jae, but Neuer managed to parry it away.
As the match progressed, Bayern continued to push for a second goal. Jamal Musiala and Kingsley Coman combined well, but Coman’s effort went wide. The decisive moment came in the closing minutes when Thomas Müller, making his 710th appearance for Bayern, scored with a brilliant left-footed strike into the top corner after a precise pass from Serge Gnabry. This goal not only secured the victory but also marked a historic milestone for Müller.
Freiburg had a chance to score a consolation goal in stoppage time when Joao Palhinha conceded a penalty for handball. However, Lucas Höler missed the target, allowing Bayern to maintain their clean sheet and secure all three points at a packed Allianz Arena.
Thomas Müller is one of the most decorated and accomplished players in football history and a record-breaking legend at Bayern Munich. He has won the Bundesliga 12 times, more than any other player. With over 700 appearances, he’s among the club’s all-time leaders. In 2019-20, he set the Bundesliga record for most assists in a season with 21. On the international stage, Müller won the Golden Boot at the 2010 World Cup and scored 10 goals across his first two tournaments. He’s also been a key figure in Bayern’s Champions League success, scoring over 50 goals and contributing to two titles (2013, 2020).
